Press Release: For Immediate Release
Riviera Youth Bike Team continues up Gibraltar and towards a year-round cycling program
March 1st, 2016
Riviera Multisport and Santa Barbara supporters are proud to announce the continuation of the Riviera Youth Bike Team, aka RYBT, for the 2016 March Season. On Tuesday, March 1st, RYBT Riders began their journey to complete the first ever RYBT Gibraltar Challenge on May 14th, 2016- a community ride to RYBT Point, approximately 4 miles up Gibraltar Road in Santa Barbara, California.
RYBT’s mission is to create a long-term positive impact on the health and fitness of ‘at risk’ children by developing and fostering a connection to cycling. The team caters to children who are struggling with issues such as obesity, inactivity, low self-esteem, bullying, abuse, and learning differences, and RYBT partnered with local organizations to find and reach out to those who would benefit. RYBT focuses on teamwork, instills in participants a strong work ethic, aims to bring out the best in each child, and encourages family participation, an important key to success. RBYT continues with the support of several local coaches, businesses, and organizations, including the well-known Echelon Cycling Club, Mad Fitness Santa Barbara, Titan Strength Performance, PhysioPhyx Nutrition, Stinner Frameworks, and Hazards Cyclesport.
Directed by Coach Zack Bertges, RYBT is seeking to be developed into a year-round bike team by the end of 2016. “2015 was an incredible year for our first program, and it was great that we were able to provide a monumental experience for the 2015 RYBT Riders. Afterwards, we faced a new challenge of what the kids can do when they’ve finished the program and have earned their bike. We taught them how to ride on the roads and encouraged family involvement, but we discovered it wouldn’t be enough for some riders who counted on the team environment or who wanted to grow more into the sport. That’s why we’re determined to provide an excellent continuation program from the last October SB100 event, while developing the structure, resources, and finances to function year-round.”
The team trains both off and on the bike, doing workouts and spin classes at Mad Fitness, and will steadily be building up their hill-climbing muscles by taking challenging and teachable routes on Saturday group rides, until the community ride to Gibraltar Point. League Certified Instructors Zack Bertges, Felicia Tan, & Barry Remis will also prepare the RYBT Riders using classroom & road instruction teaching protocols from the League of American Bicyclists’ Ascending & Descending, Group Riding curriculums, as well as guest seminars from advanced/professional cyclists.
Mad Fitness, which commits to improving the health and wellness of the Santa Barbara community via private/group training and spin classes, has not only waived workout fees for the RYBT members, but has also embraced the team, making RYBT part of the weekly operations and making special accommodations for the team’s success. “We’re really proud to be working with the Riviera Youth Bike Team again this year,” said Marianne Madsen, founder of Mad Fitness. “We really love working with the kids!”
The Riviera Youth Bike Team will continue to reach-out to the community for opportunities and collaborations. Immediately following the Gibraltar Challenge, the Riviera Youth Gala will be held as a fundraiser for the RYBT August/SB100 team and as a celebration for the RYBT Gibraltar Riders.
Details and a press release for the Riviera Youth Gala will be announced soon.
